Celebrity Color Analysis: We Measured 300 Photos
We ran 300 celebrity press photos through the same color-measurement engine we use on customer selfies. 72 failed basic quality checks outright. Of the 227 that passed, the measurement matched the community's season typing 11.5% of the time, against 8.3% for guessing. Press photos are not measurable material.
Search any famous name plus "color season" and you will find confident answers that contradict each other. One site says Soft Summer, the next says Light Spring. Everyone in this field agrees on the reason: red-carpet lighting, bronzer, self-tanner, hair dye and retouching sit between the camera and the person's actual coloring. What nobody has done is put a number on it. So we did.
What we ran
We took 300 well-known names, 25 for each of the 12 seasons, drawn from the placements the color-analysis community cites most often. For each one we pulled a public Wikimedia portrait and pushed it through the same measurement pipeline a paying customer's selfie goes through. Same engine, same landmark detection, same quality checks, no manual correction and no cherry-picking.
The pipeline reads three things from fixed points on the face: the undertone of the skin, the depth of the overall coloring, and the chroma, meaning how muted or clear the coloring runs. Those three scores place a face in one of 12 seasons. It is deterministic, so the same photo always returns the same answer.
73 of the 300 could not be measured at all
Before any season is assigned, a photo has to pass quality control. Nearly a quarter of our set never got that far.

That list is the finding in miniature. These are not obscure snapshots. They are the standard, widely-published portraits of Taylor Swift, Blake Lively, Matthew McConaughey, Amy Adams, Shakira and Tom Hiddleston. The most common single reason, by a wide margin, is that the light itself was warm or tinted, which is exactly what a red carpet is.
The 227 that passed agreed with the internet no better than chance
For the photos that cleared quality control, we compared the engine's verdict to the season the community cites for that person. There are 12 seasons, so guessing gets you 8.3%. There are four families, so guessing the family gets you 25%. Warm versus cool is a coin flip at 50%.

At every level, measurement and community consensus land within a whisker of random. Warm versus cool, the single most basic judgment in color analysis and the one the whole system rests on, came out at 48.5%, which is a coin flip.
Your own photo is a different problem entirely
A daylight selfie has none of the things that broke these portraits. One photo, about two minutes, and you get your 12-season placement plus a personalized 40-color palette, draped on your own face.
The measurements skew light, and that is the tell
If the engine were simply producing noise on hard photos, the errors would scatter. They do not. They lean hard in one direction.
Our 300 names start out evenly spread, 25 per season, and among the 227 measurable photos that spread stayed close to even. Where they landed did not.

Summer and Spring are the two light families. Winter and Autumn are the two deep ones. Going in, the split was roughly even. Coming out, 69% of the photos measured into a light family.
That is not random error. That is the signature of press photography: flash, fill light, exposure pushed for a bright publishable frame, and retouching that lifts and evens skin. Every one of those makes a face read lighter and less saturated than it is in daylight. The engine measured the photograph accurately. The photograph was not an accurate record of the person.
One more number worth stating plainly, because it cuts against us: the engine's average confidence across those 227 readings was 87.6%. It was confident and it was still measuring a version of the face that a stylist, a lighting rig and a retoucher had already changed. Confidence describes how clear-cut the measurement is, not whether the photograph deserved to be trusted.
What this does not prove
We want to be exact about the limits, because the honest version is more useful than the flattering one.
- It is not a test of accuracy, because there is no answer key. Community typings are widely-held opinions, not verified labels. When two methods disagree, this data cannot say which one is right.
- It cannot fully separate three explanations. The press photos may carry too little real signal, the community typings may be noisy, or the engine may struggle on heavily-processed images. The directional skew above points strongly at the photos, but it does not eliminate the others.
- It says nothing about daylight selfies, which are what the tool is built for and which carry none of these problems.
What we do with it
This is why our celebrity season pages describe every placement as community-cited and never as fact, and why we publish the reason a photo was refused instead of quietly guessing anyway. A famous face is a useful way to picture what a palette feels like. It is not evidence about that person, and it is definitely not evidence about you.
It is also the clearest argument we know of for why the input matters more than the algorithm. Give any honest measurement system a compromised photo and it will return a confident, precise, wrong answer. Give it a plain daylight photo of an unmade-up face and the same three traits become readable. That is the whole difference between what color analysis actually measures and typing someone from a magazine.

Why do different sites give the same celebrity different color seasons?
Because they are all reading press photos, and press photos are not reliable color records. Can you find your color season from a photo?
Yes, but the photo has to be honest. Indirect daylight, a full face in frame, little or no makeup, no filter. Those conditions are easy to meet with a selfie and nearly impossible to find in a published celebrity portrait. The measurement is only ever as good as the light it was taken in.
Are celebrity color season typings accurate?
Treat them as inspiration rather than fact. They are community opinions built from styled, lit and edited images, and they disagree with each other across sites. Our measurements agreed with them 11.5% of the time, against 8.3% for guessing, which means the two methods are close to unrelated. That is a reason to distrust the typings, the photos, or both, and not a reason to trust any single source.

Does this mean AI color analysis does not work?
It means AI color analysis cannot work on a red carpet photo, which is worth knowing before you paste one into a chatbot. The engine used here is deterministic and returns the same result for the same photo every time. What this study shows is how much a photograph can differ from the person in it. Run it on a plain daylight selfie and you are measuring the person instead.
